Unable to catch a flight across "the pond" for the royal wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton on Friday? Come to your own local castle to celebrate instead.
Real People Media, a nonprofit organization, is hosting "Reception for the Commoners" at Castle Farms in Charlevoix. The event is a fundraiser for Real People Media, which is based in Charlevoix, and teaches people how to use digital media to tell their stories. Director Rebecca Glotfelty says the idea for the fundraiser came from volunteers Molly Tate and Alice Harvey.
"It was such a fun idea -- it goes with our tagline: Giving everyone a voice," Glotfelty said.
The reception will include traditional British wedding fare, provided by Blackbird Gardens, a cash bar with wine from Black Star Farms and local beer from Short's Brewery. A variety of local musicians are donating their time for the event. Dwain Martin, Jetty Rae, the Charlevoix Sax Quartet, Northwest Academy, Castle Brass, Jazzin' It Up with Steve Little, and Gary Stutzman and Pine River Jazz will all be performing. The evening will feature costume and royal look-alike contests, wedding cake and broadcast of the wedding on the big screen. Tickets are $30, and can be purchased online at realpeoplemedia.org, or at Revolution Bike, Picture This, Elements, and Round Lake Bookstore in Charlevoix.
All proceeds will benefit Real People Media, which provides workshops for both children and adults to teach them the necessary skills to use digital media to tell their stories. Workshop topics include animation, using digital media to preserve local history and folklore, community storytelling and documentary interview. For more information, contact Real People Media at (231) 838-6460.
