Helping People Tell Their Stories Through Digital Media

Real People Media is a 501(c)3 non-profit that teaches people how to create TV programs that discuss and explore local issues. We provide technical training and access to production equipment. Volunteers produce shows that celebrate local arts and culture and inform and educate the community about local issues and events. RPM believes in Giving Everyone a Voice.

Our Purpose

Our Mission:  Helping People Tell Their Stories Through Video

Real People Media believes in that everyone should have a voice in the platforms that have become a standard in communication - TV and Internet.   We help people tell the stories of their communities by giving them access to audio and video production equipment and video production training.  We provide many of our services free of charge to ensure that those with the least means still have the ability to speak out on issues that affect their lives.

Giving Everyone a Voice

Freedom of speech and access to information are two indicators of a healthy democracy.  Community video is an important part of this equation.   Community video can also be used to:
  • Inspire community activism and engagement
  • Preserve and share community history
  • Discuss challenges and develop solutions
  • Celebrate community art, culture and more

Real People Media operates a Community Media Center in Charlevoix, Michigan.  This center services  people in Charlevoix, Emmett and Antrim Counties.  The center, which is currently under development, will house a TV studio, editing suites, an animation room and lounge room for teens, and a conference room/film screening theater.

RPM members may use our facilities to produce programming for Charter's Communications Public Access channel - UpNorth2, maintained by the Land Information Access Association located in Traverse City.  www.upnorthmedia.org.

Exploring Local Art, History, and Culture Through Video

RPM hosts film and discussion series, video production classes for students and adults, and seminars on preserving community history and culture on video.   RPM's Community Projects outreach program service communities in northern Lower Michigan and the U.P.   This program allows RPM to help organizations produce TV programs that reveal social, economic and environmental problems and efforts to solve them.   This program is funded by donations and grants.
