ReaL People Media's Fall Open House - September 8.

Thursday, September 8, 2011
5:00 - 7:30pm
Real People Media's Community Media Center
12555 Taylor Road, Charlevoix

Come enjoy refreshments, film and animation showings for children and adults, stop-motion animation fun and a final chance to view “Faces of Northern Michigan,” a juried photography exhibit featuring northern Michigan people at work and play.  Real People Media Board members and volunteers will be available to answer questions about community-produced television and their services.

During the open house, the East Jordan Shoe Club will premier their short video, “On the Jordan: Where River, Lake and Friendly People Meet.”   Real People Media director, Rebecca Glotfelty, guided five 8th graders from the Shoe Club in the production of this video, which is an introduction to the Jordan River and the Friends of the Jordan’s Watershed Center.   The program was funded by a grant from the Lynne and Mason Rosenthal Fund through the Charlevoix Community Foundation and in-kind support provided by the Friends of the Jordan.  The Shoe Club is an after school club for middle school students, led by Middle School teacher, Matt Hamilton.   The purpose of the Shoe Club is to inspire and motivate students to invest in themselves and others.

Artist/illustrator Kim Left will show visitors how to use clay, paper and pen to create animated stories on video.   RPM will be offering an after-school animation program for students in 5th-12th grades.  Animation Station allows kids to express themselves through the art of stop motion animation.  The open house is an opportunity to visit the Animation Station and meet the instructors.   Real People Media will also offer a documentary filmmaking program for high school students.   Learn more about this program at the open house.

At 6:00pm there will be the showing of “The Uncommon Loon,” a documentary by Jeff Lange of Alanson.   This hour-long film follows a loon family through the nesting season. The setting is Round Lake, just outside of Petoskey. This documentary also features other species, including sandhill cranes, snapping turtles, and herons, which share the loons’ wetland habitat, and emphasizes the vital importance of the South Round Lake Marsh, critical to the survival of the loons and their neighbors, and to the health of the lake. Afterward, the filmmaker will take questions about loons, the Loonwatch Program, and related subjects.
