Juror: Gary Howe
Photographer, Gary Howe approaches his subjects with a style and sensitivity that allows him to create the memorable images for which he is known. Since attending the Mountain Workshops in 2005, Howe has been "looking for the story behind the story."
In recent years Howe has made trips to Chiapas, Mexico, Bolivia, Rwanda and Colombia to document coffee producers selling to Fair Trade importers. He has made these trips in association with Higher Grounds Trading Co. He plans on continuing this project, and expanding it to cover other coffee growing regions including Ethiopia and Sumatra.
Howe resides in Traverse City, Michigan. In addition to photography, he teaches part-time in the Social Science Department at Northwestern Michigan College-currently teaching World Regional Geography.
He has a graduate certificate from the Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies and speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese. Currently he is battling the Spanish language. He has a bachelors degree in International Studies from Northern Michigan University.
